I think attention should be paid to the concept of “cleaning up” the original property instead of replacing, rebooting or rehashing the material.

Two cases in point.

First, Star Trek: The Original Series. Recently released in high definition, the “dated” effects have been updated. This doesn’t interfere with what was an excellent show and it keeps things from looking overtly cheesy.

Second, the original Battlestar Galactica received a demo reel showing what the series could look like remastered … and it is incredible.

I’m not suggesting that original material should be removed in favor of remastered (see Star Wars Special Editions to understand that comment) versions. I’m saying that there exists great source material out there that doesn’t NEED to be rebooted, reimagined or sequelized when a little spit and polish can bring it to life for a new generation.
